1/6/10 Update #2

Hi everyone and Happy New Year.

Calvin went back to the prosthesis guys today to have his fitting for
his plastic 'bucket' , made from the plaster cast made about a month
ago. It fit perfectly so they can make his permanent one from this.
Glad they didn't have to do another cast of it...   They have to order
all the mechanical parts, etc for it and get it constructed and then
they will call us to go back and 'try it out'....  At least two weeks
probably but that's ok as things are moving forward again.

Other wise we are both doing OK. I'm getting back into my old work
routine working at the PO/Town Office/PCCI......
Calvin is getting alot more mobile in the house as far as transferring
from wheelchair to recliner to sofa etc all by himself. The hospital
bed got moved out of the living room two weeks before Christmas and
hasn't used it since.  His left hip aches/hurts occasionaly more now
then it did so he sleeps in the recliner once in a while. (lot softer
then the mattress)....
He plans to give his hip surgeon a call soon to see what he thinks of
getting going again on the hip surgery.

Take care~~~

2/5/10 Update

Nellie Noble - Great News: Calvin's hip surgeon said his hip looks good, doesn't need surgery. No pain, full range of motion so leave it alone. Go back in 4 months. The bullet isn't doing any damage, just got to keep an eye on the lead levels and be on meds to lower. Might need surgery years down the road but he is very happy to have a break right now. Thanks for keeping him/us in your prayers and positive energy thoughts...

2/8/10 Update

I sent the below message out on Friday but sent it to Calvin instead
of Calvin mass list.  Whoops!!!!

Hi everyone,
GOOD news. Went to see the hip surgeon in Burlington today and he
took ex ray and said besides the fact there is a bullet in there it
looks fine. Checked his mobility out and it is great. He has no pain.
Dr. Bartlett said he usually operates for two reason: pain or
restricted mobility. Calvin has neither. He will probably have
arthritis in it and we have to keep a good watch on the lead levels
but if we can control that with the meds NO SURGERY....

He has been standing on it with the walker and lightly walking with
the walker occasionally but didn't want to put much weight on it till
he got the OK from Bartlett and he told him to do whatever he felt
comfortable doing. SO~~now to get exercising more with the walker and
then progress to the crutches.  Still no word on the prosthetic but
it's suppose to be being built as we speak. Told us a couple weeks and
it's been three.... We figured it would be longer.

All Calvin's incision wounds have healed up so he is bandage free for
the first time in pretty near 16 months and I did them for 12 of those
months pretty much.  Do I miss it? NO Would I do it all over again?
YES.....

2/10/10 Update from Nellie

I couldn't figure out how to BBC this email from this program so hope
no one mines.

Just had to share these pics with you all. One is a video clip but
don't think it will go thru as a video, only as a pic..

Calvin did an awesome job today and it felt so good to see him stand
'free hand' for the first time in almost 16 months!!!!!  He has a lot
of PT ahead of him but he will do it no problem.

He is so amazing.............

Update 3/15/10

Hi everybody,

Haven't stayed in touch with you all for a while so thought I'd give
you some awesome news..  Calvin is doing great at PT. They have him up
walking with crutches with and without the prosthetic. Been going
twice a week and this week for the next few will be three times a
week. Got a friend that's going to help out on transporting once a
week. Thanks Charlie!!

When we got home today he had me start his truck and move it to where
he could attempt to get in it. Wasn't  easy,  but he got in it. (it's
kind of high up) THEN, he took me for a ride up to Mud Pond Road
intersection and back.  Did an awesome job...   He'll always have to
drive an automatic as he has to have a left foot accelerator pedal
adapter. Haven't had one put in the car yet as I hope to trade early
this summer and will put it in then. Comes off very easy..

Happy Spring~~

Awesome Day!!!

A friend took Calvin to PT today for me as I needed "TO WORK"

When Calvin got home he got onto his Kabota and moved some snow around
with the bucket; then got in the truck and took me up to see his Aunt
Bev for a couple minutes; THEN-got on the Ranger and played with that
a little.  He should Sleep very well tonight!!!

It seems so good to see him outside doing things again. Not easy by a
long shot but he is determened to try...
Love him lots!!!! (and I know the feeling is mutual -ha ha)

Update 05/04/10

Hi everybody and happy spring, (or summer, or winter-depends on which
day it is. LOL)

Got some good news yesterday when we went for 'one' of  Calvin's
doctors visits. First went to FAHC in Burlington for his kidneys
ultrasound and then to see the urologist.
There was no change in his kidneys from last time, no signs of
swelling and asked if he had good outpoint and we said NO problem
there!!!!    Sooo, Calvin doesnt' have to go back to see him unless we
or his primary doctor notices a problem.  YEAH!!!!!

We go back over the middle of June to see the  surgeon about the left
hip/bullet again. C hasn't noticed any discomfort with it and he's
ALOT more active now then he was in January.  If the weather
cooperates he is outside everyday for a while trying to do something
to get a little exercise. He can walk with the crutches much better
now so will go with them inside to out around front of house to shed
area and back and that is a workout for him. That has been his biggest
goal from going to PT to get his body built back up in order to use
the crutches. Doesn't use the prosthetic leg much yet as it's very
uncomfortable to wear/use. Need to go have a couple adjustments made
to it but even then it's going to be something he uses more for
stability when standing doing something at the counter or eventually
at a workbench, etc....  Speaking of counter~ I texted him one day
last week from PCCI (the day we had a foot of snow) to say I'd be home
for lunch late and he was on his own if hungry and he texted back that
he had made me lunch but it would keep!!!!  Had made chopsuey which
was a workout for him ~getting the pans out of cupboard and the
ingredients, getting stuff to sink, etc. etc.  The things we all take
for granted to do isn't so easy when you're in a wheelchair and have
to figure out alternate ways to do stuff.  BUT we all know him well
and if there is a way he'll figure it out.

It was time for me to trade cars in July but stopped last week just to
see what was available (wanted another Suburu Forester) and got a good
deal so traded early. They changed the style some so is better for us
as far as room, etc. Not as crowded in the front, front seat is shaped
slightly different plus a few inches higher up so easier for Calvin to
get in and out of. Got my friendly mechanic doing research to get the
left throttle devise to install in it so Calvin can drive the car.
Never put it in the old car as knew we were going to trade and he
wouldn't have been ready to drive it till this spring anyway. He has
driven his truck here in town by himself and gone to St. Jay and
Littleton with a friend or John with him!!!!  Has no problem adjusting
to the foot control.

Our new granddaughter, Natalie,  should be arriving fairly soon
(Jenelle is due May 6th). We stopped for a minute yesterday to see her
on our way home and she is very uncomfortable and READY to have this
baby...She is still teaching..

Drank too much caffine late in the day so, YES, I'm up at 3 in the
morning. I can always go to sleep but then wake up around 2 or so for
a few hours... UGH  You'd think after all these years I would learn!!!
 Oh well..

My cell phone screen stopped lighting up completly the end of last
week so couldn't use my phone at all. Called them friday and they
shipped a replacement right out and it was here today
(whoops-yesterday) when we got home. thank goodnessl. I was gone ALL
day Sunday and felt so wierd not being in 'touch' with Calvin. Not
that I could have done anything as I was two hours away(plenty of cell
phones available for me to use if I wanted) but when I do go
somewhere, even to St. Jay/Lyndonville I most always text/call to
check in... Never used to use it that much but since 10/22/08 it's
never too far from me!!
I'm finally feeling better after being sick with some stupid
cold/coughing bug for about five weeks.

Well, sorry this tuned out to be soo long......

06/15/10 Update

Hi everybody,

Except for Calvin going to see his primary physician occasionally we
think he is done traveling to Burlington for a while.  YEAH!!!!!  (at
least to see doctors)

Went to see the left hip surgeon today and had an xray of course.
Doctor said "It isn't pretty, but isn't any worse then before
either"... so no surgery until it starts to bother him (or the lead
level won't stay down where it should with meds) which hopefully will
be many years down the road. He has had WAY TOO MANY surgery's then
anyone deserves over the last 20 months..    From PT he has got his
strength built up so he can go for short lengths on the crutches but
still has to depend on the wheelchair for his main mode of
transportation around house, etc.  He can go with the crutches up a
couple of steps (for instance to get into Justin or Jessica's house)
but we haven't attempted stairs yet. Takes a lot of leg strength and
balance to do stuff that most of us just take for granted.

I have more free time now because as of last week I'm no longer
working for PCCI.  Hopefully I'll have the ambition to get lots of
little projects done around the house that kind of got put on the back
burner last summer... You know-all that fun stuff like like spreading
mulch around my few flower beds, cleaning out the sheds, trimming
grass, etc etc....  It's surprising the things that need and can be
done that don't take money..   But most of all I'll have more time to
spend quality time with the hubby even if it's just sitting on our
deck in the sunshine enjoying our gorgeous view!!!!  Well, I think
it's gorgeous anyway-some people think it's creepy looking down onto a
cemetery... No body every bothers us!!!!

Well, I probably won't be sending out an update for a while unless
something comes up but you are all more then welcome to
email/call/visit anytime you wish.....

Thanks again for all your continued prayers and positive thoughts...

Nellie (and Calvin)
